Job Description
The RN is responsible for the
overall coordination and direction of nursing
care. The RN provides clinical leadership particularly in complex or
unpredictable patient/client care settings. The RN has the knowledge, skill and
judgment needed to provide competent, evidence-based nursing practice. As
a member of a collaborative care team, the RN works with other disciplines to
coordinate care to achieve patient/family outcomes. The RN contributes to
the efficient and effective functioning of the service/unit and coordination of
patient care. The RN complies
with documentation processes at NSHA sites.
Travel Nurse resources are
responsible to:
a) Understand how to meet organizational practice requirements via
completion of the Nova Scotia Health General Orientation course: Nova
Scotia Health General Orientation - Overview (nshealth.ca);
b) maintain good communications and rapport with all members of the care
team and public;
c) maintain privacy and confidentiality in accordance with NSHA policies and
procedures and the Nova Scotia Personal Health Information Act and
associated Regulations;
d) complete all required documentation by the end of shift;
e) have knowledge of all emergency codes;
f) participate (as applicable) in emergency response teams;
g) carry out duties and responsibilities in a highly professional manner;
h) continue evaluation and identification of needs required via self audit;
i) have knowledge of policies and practices required for their roles and skills
required to meet organizational practice requirements, including but not
limited to the following competencies:
a. use and care of IV infusion pumps (modules and checklist)
b. point of care testing (modules and quality controls)
c. Pyxis medication delivery system
d. falls prevention
e. pressure ulcer prevention
f. medication reconciliation
g. blood transfusion
h. Safety Improvement and Management System (“SIMS”);
j) wear uniforms for every shift (including identification/name badges); and
k) arrive for every shift on time.
Job Requirement
(b) Registration with the Nova Scotia College of Nursing
(c) Basic Life Support- Level C (Health Care Provider (“HCP”))
Certification
(d) RN entry level competencies (e.g., care and maintenance of
nasogastric tubes, intravenous (“IV”) initiation)
(e) RN post-entry level competencies (e.g. Venipuncture, Care of
Central Venous Access Device (“CVAD”), Peripherally Inserted
Central Catheter (“PICC”) line, direct administration of
intravenous medications)
